National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme: Objectives, Features & Benefits

Apprenticeship training is one of the best methods of developing skilled manpower in a country. This formal method provides practice-oriented, industry-led, effective and efficient mode training. The Government of India launched the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme on 1st October 2016 to promote the aforementioned training to the citizens of India.

What Is the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme?

Under this scheme, the Government of India will provide 25% of the stipend per apprentice to the employers. However, a maximum of ₹ 1,500 per month for an apprentice will be given to the employers. The Government will also provide a maximum of ₹ 7,500 per fresher trainee as the cost of basic training to Basic Training Providers.

Implementing agencies for this scheme will be the Regional Directorates of Apprenticeship (RDATs) and State Apprenticeship Advisers (SAAs) in the respective state and regions.

What is the Eligibility Criteria to Apply for the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme?

Eligibility criteria for this scheme are different for employers, apprentices and basic training providers.

For Employers –

  • TIN/TAN number mandatory for the employers.
  • Registration of the employees on the apprenticeship portal.
  • The employer must have a bank account linked with Aadhaar.
  • An employer must have EPFO/FACTORY/ESIC/MSME/COOPERATIVE registration number.
  • The employer must engage apprentices in a band of 2.5% to 10% of total establishment strength.

For Apprentices –

  • All apprentices need to register on the official portal.
  • Aadhaar number is mandatory for the apprentices.
  • They must have a minimum educational qualification, physical qualification and age prescribed for trade.
  • They should fulfil all the requirements of the Apprentice’s Act.
  • An apprentice should be at least 14 years in age.

For Basic Training Providers –

  • They must have a bank account linked with Aadhaar.
  • RDAT must verify the providers of Basic Training.
  • They must complete the registration on the official portal.
